Walk with us to our next chapter
Durham Family Court Clinic (DFCC) has long been a pillar in providing specialized youth justice alternatives, prevention and intervention supports in the Durham Region. However, the current name has presented several challenges that hinder our organization’s growth, mission and visibility. A name change will better reflect our services, improve community outreach and recruitment, and enhance our reputation within the field.

The Process:
Staff and the Board were asked to submit new name suggestions for the organization. After some in-person deliberation where over four pages of names were considered by all staff, we have landed on a new branding and identity.
Introducing…
The Name
Navigation for Indigenous Peoples
Indigenous communities in Canada have long used the Northstar as a guide for navigation. It is a central figure in many Indigenous stories and teachings, symbolizing guidance and constancy.
The Underground Railroad
The Northstar became a powerful symbol of hope and freedom for enslaved African Americans escaping to Canada via the Underground Railroad. They followed the North Star northward to reach safety and freedom in Canada.
Cultural Symbolism
The Northstar represents guidance, direction, and resilience, values deeply embedded in Canadian history and identity. Its role as a beacon of hope and direction resonates across various aspects of Canadian heritage.
What it means to us?
For a youth justice organization, Northstar means empowering young individuals, helping them navigate challenges and supporting their way toward brighter futures.

The Logo
The logo represents the map of Durham Region, our home base.
The Tagline
From Advocacy to Impact
The tagline represents a clear, concise call to action. It highlights the organization’s commitment to not just raising awareness (advocacy) but also driving meaningful change (impact) in the lives of young people.
It succinctly communicates a clear mission—turning words, policies, and intentions into real-world, measurable outcomes that benefit youth.
When is the change happening?
On May 1st, 2025, DFCC officially became Northstar. The change was accompanied by new digital assets, including a newly designed website (nscommunity.ca) and a communication roll-out to the community and systems collaborators.
