Intensive Support and Supervision Program (ISSP)

The Intensive Support and Supervision Program (ISSP) at Northstar offers an alternative to custody for young people whose mental health challenges are identified as contributing factors to their offending behaviors. This program involves seeing clients 2-3 times per week, focusing on those with qualifying diagnoses such as major mental health disorders or dual diagnoses. Our specialists work collaboratively with clients to create and develop overarching goals, addressing these through monthly therapeutic interventions. We also partner with community organizations to provide comprehensive support. The program currently supports seven clients, with no one on the referral list, reflecting the intensive nature of the support provided.
Impact on the Community
The ISSP has had a significant impact on the community by providing targeted support to young people who might otherwise face incarceration. By addressing the root causes of their behaviors through mental health interventions, we help reduce recidivism and promote healthier, more productive lives. The program’s success is evident in the positive changes seen in our clients, who often go on to lead more stable and fulfilling lives. Our partnerships with community organizations further amplify our impact, creating a network of support that extends beyond our direct services.

Currently, the ISSP team includes two specialists: Usama, who has been with us for almost three years, and Laura-Lee, who joined at the end of 2024.
