Understanding Consent
This resource helps students, parents, and educators understand what consent means in both everyday situations and under the law. While the basic idea, clear, voluntary, and ongoing agreement, may seem simple, consent can be difficult to understand legally because it depends on context, capacity, communication, and can change at any time. The law also places strict limits on who can give consent, particularly in situations involving age, power imbalance, or authority, which can make real-life situations feel confusing or uncertain. This resource breaks down those complexities in clear, accessible language, helping readers recognize what consent looks like, what it doesn’t, and how to navigate it with confidence. Ultimately, it aims to build awareness, reduce harm, and support safer, more respectful interactions in schools and communities.
Navigating the Youth Justice System
The aim of this project was twofold: to advance a structured, restorative practice at the point of youth sentencing, and to meaningfully educate and empower racialized communities about their rights, responsibilities, and available options within the youth justice system. As part of this work, Northstar facilitated seven community education sessions with racialized communities, creating accessible spaces to build understanding of youth court processes and to support families and youth in making informed decisions at critical moments.
